Understanding Moneylines

Bovada SportsThere are a lot of terms used to classify numerous betting styles in sports betting. The most known betting style that most gamblers who engage in sports betting settle for is point spread. In point spread, players get the opportunity to stake the same amount on the winning odds of both teams hoping they won’t be so unlucky to experience a draw from the game. If any team wins, they accumulate a profit.

Although moneyline offers the same opportunity of betting on winning sides, unlike in point spread that offers similar odd margins, Moneylines offers a wider odd margin. Money line offers its odds in a + and – format. It’s no news that every sports game have a favourite and underdog, the underdog gets higher odds while the favourite gets lesser odds. Moneyline associate + tag to the odds provided for the underdog while a – tag is associated with the favourites.

Moneylines style of betting usually favours those who are staking on the underdogs. The odds provided for the underdogs are usually very high accumulating a better winning potential for the players. it’s still very possible to use moneyline to stake on the favourite and it's sometimes advisable to do so, but have in mind that if you lose a moneyline bet staked on the favourite team you would be losing a lot more money and even if you win, you won’t accumulate that much money.

Moneyline Bet Example

Getting accustomed with the odds moneyline offers can be very complicating especially if you are new to sports betting, but not to worry, we have a good deal of examples below to give you a proper understanding of the winning potentials moneylines hold. Most moneylines examples would tell you how to accumulate a profit of $100 but keep in mind that the staking power used is entirely your choice to make.

If the Washington Senators baseball team is having a match with the 1948 Boston Red Sox, the odds provided for each team would be based on the bookies' preference as to who is in a better position to win. In a situation where the Washington Senators are in a better position to win, the potential moneyline odds that would be given out would be like these.

  • Washington Senators -150
  • Boston Red Sox +130

In a situation like this, placing a bet on the Washington Senators to accumulate a $100 profit would require $150 stake while staking $100 on the underdogs Boston Red Sox would accumulate a profit $150 if they win. Staking on the favourite is going to require more money and accumulate lesser pay-out but the underdogs would require lesser money and accumulate better pay-out.

Moneyline betting is mostly used in baseball, hockey, soccer, boxing, tennis etc. This style of play works on sports that don't accumulate much-winning margins between opponents making point spread irrelevant.
Another typical but unusual example that would give you a better understanding of the Moneyline rules is in a game of boxing were the odd margins are high. For instance, if Mayweather is having a boxing match with MC-Gregor and the bookies are favouring Mayweather with an unusual odd.

  • Mayweather -800
  • MC-Gregor +650

Staking on Mayweather would require a whopping $700 stake to accumulate up to a $100 gain while a $100 stake on MC-Gregor would accumulate a possible win of $650. In the moneyline style of betting, the bookies use the amount from either side that loses to settle the winning side while if the game is in their favour and ends in a tie, they take home everything.

Moneyline and Point spread style of betting

Point spread style of betting is the most used and has a wider range of games to its name compared to moneyline. Although they are a lot of games that accept both styles of betting, so you shouldn't feel you would need to stick with just one style. The moneyline style usually requires a higher amount of money when staking on the favourites if you want to accumulate a reasonable profit, while the point spread does not require much because it offers the players the opportunity of staking almost the same amount across the either winning possibilities.

The bookmakers provide the underdogs and favourite odds to entice players, depending on the team of your choice. It’s up to you to do the essential calculations in other for the bookmakers not to use your funds to pay out the winning side. Keep in mind that no matter who ends up on the winning side the bookmakers always gain from the losses on the other end.

Finally

Sports betting requires a lot of time and patience to achieve success at any sporting event, using any style of play would not guarantee a better profit except you take all the essentialities into consideration.
